PERFORMED CONFERENCE BY YOANN VAN PARYS
ASTÉRIX AND OBÉLIX ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA

As part of the residency ACROSS #23 organized by thankyouforcoming in Nice, Yoann Van Parys invites us in the footsteps of the cartoon characters “Obelix and Asterix on the French Riviera”, in search of the invisible thread between an individual’s creation and the poetics of their territory of origin.

“Whilst writing many texts about numerous artists, I started to notice something that has never ceased to intrigue me. I had the impression, the conviction even, that there always seems to be a link between an artist’s individual imagination and the collective, geographical, even regional imaginary from where he or she was born. As if there was an invisible thread stretching between an individual’s creation and the poetics of their territory of origin. (…)
My stay in Nice seems to be an ideal context to further this research on the cartography of imagination and to share it. I propose under the somewhat jokey title of “Obélix et Astérix on the Côte d’Azur” to be interested in the creation of the said region, in order to identify the main features of its collective imagination, and the works of the artists living there. This involves collecting images, information, impressions, gleaned from people and places. Then, a highly rigorous communication of my findings.”

This residency ACROSS by Yoann Van Parys is generously supported by the WBI – Wallonie Bruxelles International.
